Joomla 1.6 improved and modernized
The Joomla 1.6 is released yesterday, which features improvements in any aspect. The new version of Joomla 1.6 was in development 3 years. The project has about 80 volunteer developers including several who manage the core code.
Alongside WordPress and Drupal, Joomla is number one of open-source Web content management systems (CMS) that are used by almost 11% of all internet space. Private users, companies, universities in that context; eBay, Citibank, General Electric, Harvard University, Ikea, McDonald’s are just few of the Joomla user community.
In addition to the usual round of bug fixes and feature improvements, this new edition of Joomla also features some substantial improvements.
Most notable feature is new access control system. The new version gives a lot more power and control to the administrators over how users can view and manage content. The old system offered only a predefined set of groups. The new software offers a console that will allow administrators to specify what actions each user can take in regard to a particular page. The permissions levels can be created also within multiple groups.
There are also improvements in Joomla organizational model. With the previous version, administrators could only classify material within a two-level hierarchy of sections and categories. Multiple categories could be placed under a single section, but categories could not be broken into subcategories. Now, an unlimited number of subcategories can be placed under categories. This ability to build a more complex category tree should help organizations better organize their material.
Updates have also been made to the presentation layer. Now HTML tables are replaced with XHTML, a subset of HTML rendered within the XML (Extensible Markup Language) format. With this move, a cleaner code will be generated.
Other improvements are: one-click extension updates, ability to implement a multi-language site and the ability to use Joomla as application framework. The software’s architecture has been reorganized so now developers can start using the Joomla framework to do things that do not involve content management.
