What’s new on Ubunutu 10.10? You cannot have full GUI root access with the default user created during the system installation. This is according to a new security policy of Ubuntu system. Ubuntu treats every user like beginner, so if you are advanced user you can create root permissions at any time. Very wisely. But if you tired of textual root commands in your terminal and you want full GUI power follow this tutorial.

1. Create root user
To create root user, open terminal (Applications/Accessories/Terminal) and enter:

sudo passwd root

Next, enter your user password then new root password and again confirm your root password as it follows:

1. [sudo] password for current ubuntu user
2. Enter new UNIX password:
3. Retype new UNIX password:

Now you GUI root user is created.

2. Login as a root user
To login as root, you must first log out from your current session and login with:

username: root
password: your newly created root password

Note: Use root only to complete your critical tasks, after that return back in normal Ubuntu mode.
