Gianduia – Apple Flash replacement

By Detector | 10 May 2010

Apple is preparing an alternative to Flash and other similar closed source technologies that requires installation of a separate plugin. The project name is Gianduia – named by Italian chocolate. Technology was presented at last year’s World Conference of WebObjects Developer Conference (WOWODC) and is based on standardized HTML 5, JavaScript and CSS that enable development of RIA (Rich Internet Applications) without need of plugin installation.

Gianduia is already in use in apple retail support applications such as One to One program, iPhone reservation system and Concierge program for Genius Bar and Personal Shopping reservations, and more details about development progress and availability for use are expected at this year’s WOWODC conference, held shortly before the June’s WWDC.

According to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, Flash will not be supported on Apple devices because of it’s closed code nature and Apple will support only open web standards, so it’s logically that Gianduia will be available for all users and developers.

hm, this is not very good for me. I am building web shops and I am working with flash and silverlight. Suppose that my web application will not work on Safari browsers… Hm, has anyone any suggestions or idea how to avoid this “Apple business games” and run flash and silverlight on Safari?

    • I think Apple solution will work on every browser becouse there is no need of any plugin installation, so building your websites with open web solutions like apple open web technology will be very wisely.

  2. Ask any experience designer. He would simply reply there is no replacement for flash. Way to go for Apple too.
