Windows tip: Hide Your Computer from the Network

By Detector | 11 May 2009

Assume you have a network environment with couple of servers and over a hundred or maybe even a thousand desktop operating systems. If you search for a computer by its name using “My Network Places”, then you’ll se a list of all computers that are members of your domain or workgroup. If you, for some reason (security?), maybe want to stop the name of a certain computer appearing on the list, then you should check out the Microsoft’s KB article (HERE). In fact, the article explains how to hide a computer’s name from the list of the Windows based computers. The procedure is not complicated, and just in few minutes you can check if you configured everything correctly. There are two ways: using NET CONFIG SERVER or using Registry modification.
