Faster, slimmer and more energy efficient $200 netbook
The new netbook platform will ensure non-x86-based chips delivering up to eight hours of battery life, thinner and faster experience than currently offered Intel Atom based netbooks.
The company that is behind this project Freescale, announced new netbook design which will brought users 3G connectivity, all day battery life, and the use of their own i.MX515 processor based on ARM Cortex-A8 technology. This CPU is not x86-based, but has advantages over x86 based CPU’s mostly in energy efficiency using a RISC-like design.
The notebook at first, will be coming with Ubuntu, Xandros and other OS’s so the platform will be flexible which is better for final user.
Freescale is aiming to redirect the netbook market away from x86 and Intel with their new chip and netbook offering. The company want to have their netbooks in production by the middle of this year, so the battle will be quite interesting according to announced feature technologies from Intel, AMD, Zii, VIA, and Freescale on the market.
