The biggest Ardour sponsor SAE (SAE Institute originally the School of Audio Engineering) announced they would be withdrawing their sponsorship of the Ardour Digital Audio Workstation software for Linux. Paul Davis the lead developer on the project has therefore asked for donations to help keep the project running. Donate to Ardour here.

Ardour is a professional digital audio workstation for Linux and MacOS. You can use it to record, edit and mix multi-track audio, produce your own CDs, mix video soundtracks. It support multitrack/multichannel audio recording, non-linear editor with unlimited undo/redo, LADSPA plugins, VST plugins (effects and instruments), powerful mixer, and many more tools like ProTools, Nuendo, Pyramix, or Apple Logic.

The bigest difference with Ardour, from other DAWs of its level, is that it is free open source software.
