Set Capslock, Numlock and Scroll Lock startup state in Windows

By Detector | 15 January 2009

If you want to set the startup state for Capslock, Numlock and Scroll Lock in Windows you just need to edit the registry. The startup state of these keys are very useful when the keys are actually shortcuts of applications (POS consoles, ATM consoles or other type of work consoles) which automatically run when OS starts. To set the startup state follow next steps:

  1. Start Regedit
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Keyboard
  3. Open InitialKeyboardIndicators
  4. Change the value to one of the following numbers
    0 – All Keys off
    1 – Caps Lock on
    2 – Num Lock on
    4 – Scroll Lock on
  5. For multiple keys, add their values:
3 – Caps Lock and Num Lock on
5 – Caps Lock and Scroll Lock on
6 – Num Lock and Scroll Lock on
7 – Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock on
  6. Log off and back on again.

  1. Kos says:

    Nice tip, BUT…..
InitialKeyboardIndicators is at least 6 times in my XP registry.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keyboard
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurentVersion\IniFileMapping\win.ini\Windows (is not the one to change I think)
    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\ControlPanel\Keyboard
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\ControlPanel\Keyboard
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\ControlPanel\Keyboard
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\ControlPanel\Keyboard
    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-1644491937-299502267-725345543-1003\ControlPanel\Keyboard

If I change the value -into 4- close regedit and restart the values are set back to 0
Is there solution for this problem?
