ATI soon plans to enable playback of high-definition protected Blu-ray video content under Linux systems.

In October, the company intends to enable new version of Catalyst video drivers that will support hardware Hi-Def video acceleration of ATI Graphics card under Linux. This means reduced price production of home-theater personal computers (HTPCs) featuring Linux operating system. But initially drivers will be only available for OEM partners.

For a complete commotion of Hi-Def video under Linux the software changes must be made, so open source video players and special software players(for protected content) can take advantage of ATI’s universal video decoder (UVD) and Avivo HD technologies.
