How to increase your internet speed or bandwidth for 20%

By Detector | 26 March 2008

DetectorPro detects another useful tip which will help windows users to increase their internet speed or bandwidth for 20%. If you don’t know, by default, windows use 20% of your bandwidth. Microsoft reserves this 20% for their purposes (suspect for updates, report error or other similar things). With a little modification of specific windows function, you can back this 20% for you own use and increase your internet speed for 20%. This tutorial is updated and graphically explained. Click here for updated tutorial.

Instructions for increasing internet speed for 20%:

  1. Click: Start–>Run–>type “gpedit.msc” without the ” sign. This will open the group policy editor. Choose from menu: Local Computer Policy -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> QOS Packet Scheduler -> Limit Reservable Bandwidth
  2. Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. Windows will say it is not configured, but the real status is shown under the ‘Explain’ tab: “By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”
  3. Now, just enable reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
  4. That’s it!

This modification will not allow to Microsoft to reserve 20% of your internet speed for their purposes. Changing of this parameter to ZERO will not change windows performance; just will increase your internet speed and bandwidth.

    Snake oil. Pure and simple.

First, this change doesn’t affect home computers. Only when certain applications seek to reserve bandwidth will it have an effect.

Second, if you’re using a home network, you may have read somewhere that your home router is ’100mbps’ or one hundred megabits per second. Sounds pretty fast right? Well it is. Right click on an empty area in your taskbar/startbar and click Task Manager. Go to the Networking tab. My computer is pretty up to date, so I have a “1 Gbps” link speed. That’s 68 times faster than the internet connection I buy from the cable company, which is “15 Mbps”.

So even if I did change my reservable bandwidth from 20% to 0%, and if we were to -pretend- it did something, the result would be that I wouldn’t gain anything. Even if 20% of my bandwidth were always reserved no matter what, the difference is that I’d have either 800 Mbps or 1000 Mbps, both of which are much higher than my cable modem’s 15 Mbps.

So even if we put on our pretend fairytale hats and let snake oil salesmen string us along, simple deduction shows that your snake oil won’t affect the vast majority of home users. And that’s if we give you the benefit of the doubt. If we don’t assume you’re already right, then you’re doubly wrong.
